invisible/visible disability

According to the #DeafIndividuals,...their #oppression revolves around the #accessibility of #communication, and the legacy of poor literacy and education from lack of communication #mistreatment of #deaf children and #misdiagnosis of deaf children as intellectually challenged.
Such different specific sources of oppression are bound to shape the struggles of these two peoples in different ways. They'll be hurt by different things, aim their efforts at different problems & fight different institutions, to the point where they may not recognize each other as potential allies at all. -Anne Bishop.

The form that #oppression takes is affected greatly by the particular #history of the #group in question. Compare the oppression of the #Jewish people to that of #Deafpeople. The #identity of Jewish people has taken shape through #history of being forced to leave one country after another. #Jewish members of the re-evaluation counseling community have written about the imprint this history has left on them, collectively and individually. They say it is #difficult for them to feel welcome anywhere.- Anne Bishop, Becoming An #Ally

This division appears within the ranks of those who are #struggling with issues of #disability because some physical differences are visible & others are not. The #visible suffer the immediate #discrimination of people who become #uncomfortable in their presence, treat them as children or #ignore them altogether, the invisible must continually make decisions about whom to tell, when and why. They do not get the sympathy for their cause that those with more visible disabilities receive.-Anne Bishop-Becoming An #Ally.
